Barclays Singapore Open

My friend had tickets to go for the Barclays Singapore Open so we decided to go last Sunday, which was the final day of competition, the day to catch the best golfers remaining. I was never really into golf as I was not good at it, and it gets frustrating when you know you are not that good, and when you are frustrated, it only affects your game more, so its a vicious cycle.

But its still intriguing for me how it forces you to stay focused and keep emotions in check whether you are doing well or having a bad day. So you can imagine at the bright beginning of the day, I was already starting to feel a little moody as there I was at the exhibitors tent trying my luck at those putting games and seeing whether I could win some simple door gifts. 10 year old kids, old grannies and everybody else there were all having a fun time sinking their shots while I was making a fool of myself missing EVERYTHING. Haha, right at the start I had to tell myself to go 'OMM' and just make my quick exit to the golf course proper.

At the golf course, I was happily walking around picking the most interesting flight to follow, when suddenly the choice was obvious, before knowing who was in the flight, there was already the obvious signs of a star because of the size of the crowd and the volume of the clapping after a perfect sounding shot. It was Phil Mickelson! It is quite a drama following him as I think he would tell you it wasnt his best days as he kept missing the greens and landing in bunkers but what seperates the pros from the mere mortals are that he is completly unfazed and just continue making marvelous shots from behind the trees or deep in the bunkers as if it was normal. Then he makes your heart sink again when he is so so close to a birdie yet misses it by the width of a blade of grass.

I only caught the eventual winner Ian Poulter at one hole, which he had, yet another, birdie. So he was real smooth and considering the difficulties I saw Phil Mickelson and the rest were having, it was not a straightforward course so a worthy winner!

Baby's Day Out @ HortPark

It was a perfect Sunday morning to be out in a park having fun in the sun and where else but HortPark where MediaCorp's Mother & Baby was organising Baby's Day Out. You know Singaporeans are such a funny bunch of people, on the one hand you have people holding on to 3 million old EZLink cards and are 'too busy' to exchange for new cards before 1 Oct, and yet, there were so many parents that bothers to wake up early to be at HortPark on Sunday! Was supposed to register my baby Natalie for a baby 'catwalk' competition at 830am but lazy me reached just past 9am thinking that I should still be able to register but 'sorry, registration already full' and there were slots for like 30 babies 'Wow!' Anyway its their loss that they didnt get to see the real star of the show, Natalie yeah!

She was having so much fun baby-watching and Mummy was bringing her out on the grass to try standing and walking. And after all the playtime, there were 'free' Heinz rusks for her to munch on, which was perfect as she is currently in a teething stage and loves stuffing things in her mouth to bite on. She enjoyed it so much, convinced Mummy to buy extra boxes just for her, you see, there are no free stuff in this world, except love :)

Took a lovely family photo before calling it a day, just as baby Natalie was getting hungry and grouchy but hopefully with lots of happy memories of her Sunday garden party.

Moonfest @ Esplanade

The usual way my family celebrates Mid-Autumn Festival has always been at home with mooncakes (double yolk please) and nice hot chinese tea. This year is a little different as Grandma and Mom went to catch Cantonese Opera at the Esplanade on the day itself. I thought it was a good a idea to send them to the Esplanade and also bring little Natalie as well, because there was the Moonfest going on at the public areas of Esplanade to keep her occupied.

My mom, wife and darling Natalie

Grandma in the picture as well

Not much pictures of Natalie with her grandma and ah tai as they entered the theatre earlier to make their way to the seats slowly. From what we heard, lots of steps and not particularly elderly friendly. Since the crowd watching Cantonese Opera on Mid Autumn was predominately elderly anyway, it was probably a wise decision.

So after sending Grandma and Mom to the theatre, it was time for Natalie to explore her first experience at the Esplanade.

So cute!

Not sure what dough figurines have to do with Mid-Autumn festivals but I suppose it is an opportunity to showcase the finer points of Chinese culture to the young. For just $2, they get to learn how to make the dough pandas, quite a learning experience, too bad Natalie is still way too young for this.

Natalie finds a friend!

Pretty lanterns lining the Esplanade walkways

Seems to do the trick for Natalie

My little girl listening on intently.

It was all very pretty with the Merlion, the Fullerton and the general cityscape as the backdrop. Bet it would look even better when the construction of the Integrated Resort finishes.

A nice family photo

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!

Games Convention Asia 09 @ Suntec

Was at Suntec for the GCA to see if I could convince myself to get something for my Wii console, which is criminally underused since I bought it more than 2 years ago. I have been tempted by the Wii Fit and the Wii mat but have always convinced myself that I don't really need it and I would buy it later when there is a massive sale. That sale has never happened and while the prices were decent at the convention, I managed to shelf that purchase yet again.. So the point of going there is yet again to cover the gamer babes haha

First up was the soccer babes, I was asking them what they were promoting and I thought I heard 'you are to score with me, but you have to be gentle' woohoo! actually I was just to score a goal with them as the goalkeepers and the gentle part is because it is obviously not a soccer pitch and if you kick really hard, the ball just flies off somewhere and you end up having to run off fetching the ball back for them. Easy enough..

Next up were the Masquerade babes, I am to pick one correct card out of three while the girl distract you with their shuffling, their cool cosplay dressing and her accomplice talking to you and trying to peel your eyes away from the cards, wasn't that hard either..

Then came the Dragonica challenge which was the easiest of all, just had to blow a balloon up, which I conveniently got the gal to pose with while I took the photo..

The last challenge was the hardest.. I had to use a toy gun and aim for a target using some with these two babes distracting you.. easily the hottest babes around..

There were others of course

But the games generally speak for themselves and the biggest brands were generally represented with games for the Wii, XBox, Playstation and PC all there.

Forza Motorsports was particularly cool as there was a full racing simulator with three huge screens and 'boomz' sound systems for you to get into that Formula One mood. Awesome!

I have said before that I was never a diehard gamer but I do remember spending lots of time playing Pacman on the PC and other old-timers like Tetris, Romance of the Three Kingdom, Civilisation, Super Mario and Contra on the Nintendo clones, Sonic the Hedgehog and Mortal Kombat on the SEGA and it sort of died down for me, but everytime I go to such events and see the latest FIFA or NBA or Wii Sports Resort and Need For Speed etc I feel so 'Wow!' It is probably a blessing that I grew up in an earlier era of gaming as I seriously doubt my ability to pull myself from these distractions if I am a student now.

Singapore Toys, Games & Comic Convention 2009

Play time is serious business. Never been much of an fan but you have to admire how it captures the hearts and minds of so many people. Weijie is surely a much bigger fan and much much better artist and a perfect friend to check out the TGCC 2009.

The familiar face of Mario and Luigi greeted us at the door

Posing with a cute looking Wii Babe.

Was just thinking that Nintendo really struck gold with Super Mario Bros, which first came out back when I was a kid more than 20 years ago? and yet still an icon today on the Wii. By the way, I think the Wii rocks! and people will be looking back 20 years later and think that the Wii was truly a milestone in gaming technology.

Another time-tested icon is Gundam and you can choose the cutesy version..

Or the all-action version..

These guys can even do it for Optimus Prime!

By comparison, franchises like Monopoly looks boring by comparison, but Monopoly has always managed to refresh its image time and again and still a cool game to play today.

Check out Weijie with a Cosplay Gal

Whether you are more of a Western influence

Or more a manga fan

You cannot go without the babes and the boobs.

Speaking of which, there was a event for the Ultimate Play Babe and the contestants all had to don Cosplay uniforms which was suitably cutesy and highlighted their long legs.

Iris - Love the hair and the long legs

Angeline - nice friendly looking smile

Eileen - A little too tanned for a Cosplay gal

Florence - She is just too sweet, kawaii!!

Jerlin - Too lanky for a Cosplay gal, but with those long legs, she could try modelling though

Amanda - Sorry, not the best of shots, but looks prettier in real life, another lanky model type.

Since they were Game babes, part of the action was to slug it out on a Wii

They were playing what should be the new Wii Sport Resort but I was hoping more for some dance moves or something, what is the Wii Fit for right?

The winner - Adeline! (I prefer Florence or Iris, but they both lost their challenges whereas Adeline held her Wii like a light sabre and swung like a Jedi. For one so cute, not one to mess around with a Wii, so a deserving winner no less)

A few more Cosplay shots and the rest can be seen in the slideshow
